Can two boats be on the same policy?
Yes. Multiple boats can be added to your Markel Specialty insurance policy if the boats are in the same state. If your boats are in different states, multiple policies may be required.

Are boat insurance discounts available?
Yes. Markel offers a variety of boat insurance discounts that could save you up to 35%!

  • Multiple units discount for all units on the same policy
  • Experienced boater discount (for boaters with 5+ years of experience)
  • Diesel engine discount
  • Outboard propulsion discount
  • Older operator discount (for those of us 40 or over)

Markel also offers a diminishing deductible program. Your deductible will decrease by 25% for each consecutive accident-free year.

Can I insure my older boat?
Yes. Boats of all ages are covered. If you still have questions, give our agency a call to discuss the best coverage for you and your boat.

Is normal wear and tear of my boat covered?
Policies typically will not cover normal wear and tear. However, Markel’s consequential damage coverage protects your boat if it is damaged by a fire, explosion, sinking, collision or stranding.

Additionally , if you purchase Markel’s optional ultimate drive coverage, your boat will be protected should a mechanical breakdown occur due to wear and tear or defect of the outboard or sterndrive.

Can I still insure my boat if it’s in a corporation’s name?
Yes. Boat insurance from Markel will cover corporately titled boats for both client entertainment and personal use. Markel requires that all corporately titled boats appoint a designee of the watercraft.

Is boat trailer coverage included?
Yes. Your boat trailer is covered if it is damaged while transporting the insured watercraft. Markel’s base policy automatically includes $500 of coverage. You may also purchase up to $7,500 worth of additional coverage.

Is watersport liability offered?
Yes. Watersport liability is automatically included on most boats that are able to participate in watersport activities. While personal boating activities are covered, competitive watersport activities are excluded.

Am I covered should my engine block freeze and crack?
Yes. Markel offers ice and freezing coverage that you can add to your policy. To learn more about this coverage, please call our agency.

Do I pay more if my kids waterski?
No. Markel knows waterskiing is one of the main reasons people buy boats, so you will not be charged extra for it.

What types of fishing equipment are covered?
Your personal effects coverage may automatically cover your rods, reels, and tackle, up to the limit purchased. If more coverage is needed, Markel’s fishing equipment coverage provides protection at replacement cost. Please call our agency to find out more.

Does my boat need to be insured during the winter?
Because your boat could be at risk for damages during all times of the year, including when it's not on the water, you may want to consider year round coverage. For example, if your boat is damaged while it’s being stored in the winter, you will need an active insurance policy to file a claim.
